What is professional teeth cleaning?

Professional teeth cleaning — also called a dental cleaning, prophylaxis, or scale and polish — is a routine treatment performed by a dental hygienist or dentist to remove plaque and hardened tartar (calculus) from your teeth. No matter how well you brush and floss at home, some plaque always builds up in hard-to-reach areas, and once it hardens into tartar, it can only be removed with professional instruments. A dental cleaning gets your teeth genuinely clean, smooths the surfaces, and gives your dentist a chance to catch small problems before they become big, expensive ones.

Think of it this way: brushing and flossing are your daily maintenance, but a professional teeth cleaning is the deep reset your mouth needs a few times a year. It’s quick, comfortable, and one of the best-value treatments in dentistry — a small investment that protects you from cavities, gum disease, bad breath, and costly treatment down the road.

Why is teeth cleaning so important?

Regular teeth cleaning does far more than leave your mouth feeling fresh. Here’s why it matters:

  • Prevents cavities. Plaque produces acids that eat away at enamel. Removing it regularly stops decay before it starts.
  • Protects your gums. Tartar below the gumline is the leading cause of gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis), which is the number-one cause of adult tooth loss.
  • Freshens your breath. Chronic bad breath is often caused by bacteria and trapped debris that a cleaning removes.
  • Brightens your smile. Cleaning and polishing lifts surface stains from coffee, tea, and food, leaving teeth noticeably whiter.
  • Catches problems early. Every cleaning includes a check-up, so cavities, cracks, and early gum issues are spotted while they’re easy to treat.
  • Supports your overall health. Research links gum disease to heart disease, diabetes, and other conditions, so a healthy mouth supports a healthier body.

Skipping cleanings might save a little time today, but it almost always leads to more discomfort and higher costs later. Prevention is always cheaper and easier than treatment.

What happens during a teeth cleaning appointment?

If it’s been a while since your last visit, knowing what to expect can put your mind at ease. A typical teeth cleaning at Eglinton Oak Dental in Mississauga includes:

  1. Examination. Your hygienist or dentist first checks your teeth and gums, often with X-rays, to assess your oral health and spot any concerns.
  2. Scaling. Using gentle hand instruments and/or an ultrasonic scaler, we remove plaque and tartar from your teeth and along the gumline — especially in the spots your toothbrush can’t reach.
  3. Polishing. A professional-grade polishing paste smooths and shines your teeth, removing surface stains and making it harder for plaque to stick.
  4. Flossing. We floss thoroughly between every tooth to clear out anything left behind and check for tight contacts or bleeding.
  5. Fluoride treatment (optional). A fluoride application strengthens enamel and adds an extra layer of cavity protection, especially helpful for kids and higher-risk patients.
  6. Advice & next steps. Finally, we’ll share personalised tips for your home care and recommend when to return.

The whole appointment usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes, and most patients find it relaxing. You’ll leave with a fresh, smooth, noticeably cleaner smile.

How often should you get your teeth cleaned?

For most people, a professional teeth cleaning every six months is ideal — that’s two cleanings a year. This schedule keeps plaque and tartar under control and lets your dentist monitor your oral health closely. However, the right frequency depends on your individual needs:

  • Every 6 months — recommended for most healthy adults and children.
  • Every 3–4 months — often advised for patients with gum disease, diabetes, a history of heavy tartar buildup, or those who smoke.
  • More frequently — sometimes recommended during active gum treatment or for patients with braces or other appliances that trap plaque.

At your visit we’ll assess your mouth and recommend a cleaning schedule that’s right for you — not a one-size-fits-all number. If it’s been more than a year since your last cleaning, don’t worry: the best time to restart is now.

How much does teeth cleaning cost in Mississauga?

The cost of teeth cleaning in Mississauga depends on how much buildup needs to be removed, whether X-rays and an exam are included, and whether you need a regular cleaning or a deeper periodontal cleaning. As a general guide for 2026:

  • Routine cleaning & polish (recall): roughly $100 – $250, depending on the amount of scaling required.
  • Cleaning with exam and X-rays (new patient or annual): roughly $200 – $400 in total.
  • Deep cleaning (scaling & root planing) for gum disease: more involved and usually priced per quadrant of the mouth.

Dental fees in Ontario follow a suggested fee guide, and the final cost is based on the time and “units of scaling” involved — patients with more tartar buildup need more scaling. The best way to know your exact price is a quick assessment, where we’ll examine your teeth and give you a clear, upfront quote before anything begins. We believe in honest, transparent pricing with no surprises.

Is teeth cleaning covered by insurance or the CDCP?

Good news: professional teeth cleaning is one of the most commonly covered dental treatments. Most Canadian dental insurance plans cover routine cleanings and exams — often at 80–100% — usually once or twice per year up to your annual maximum. It’s worth checking two things on your plan: how many cleanings (or units of scaling) are covered each year, and your recall frequency.

If you qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), preventive treatments like cleanings, exams, and X-rays are typically included, since the CDCP focuses on essential and preventive care. Our team is happy to review your coverage, explain what’s included, and submit your claim so you get the most from your benefits. We also offer direct billing where possible to make things simple.

Does teeth cleaning hurt?

For most people, a routine teeth cleaning is completely painless — you’ll feel some scraping, vibration from the ultrasonic scaler, and a bit of pressure, but no real pain. If your gums are inflamed or you have a lot of tartar buildup, you might notice some sensitivity or minor bleeding, which is actually a sign that your gums need the cleaning. We work gently and can use numbing gel or other comfort measures if you’re sensitive. If you feel any discomfort during your appointment, just let us know and we’ll adjust — your comfort is always our priority.

Many nervous patients tell us afterward that the cleaning was far easier than they expected. The more regularly you come, the less buildup there is to remove, and the more comfortable each visit becomes.

Regular cleaning vs deep cleaning: what’s the difference?

Not all cleanings are the same. Understanding the two main types helps you know what to expect:

Regular cleaning (prophylaxis). This is the standard preventive cleaning for healthy mouths. It removes plaque and tartar above and slightly below the gumline, then polishes. This is what most people need at their six-month recall.

Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing). When gum disease has caused deeper pockets and tartar has built up below the gumline on the tooth roots, a deep cleaning is needed. Scaling removes the buildup from the roots, and root planing smooths the root surfaces so the gums can reattach and heal. Deep cleaning may be done over more than one visit and sometimes with local anaesthetic for comfort. It’s an important treatment that can stop gum disease from progressing to tooth loss. If you have persistent bad breath, bleeding gums, or gum recession, ask us whether a deep cleaning is right for you — you can also learn more about our gum disease treatment.

Signs it’s time for a teeth cleaning

Ideally you shouldn’t wait for symptoms — regular cleanings prevent problems before they start. But you should book a cleaning sooner rather than later if you notice any of these:

  • Bleeding gums when you brush or floss
  • Persistent bad breath or a bad taste that won’t go away
  • Yellow or brown buildup (tartar) along the gumline
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Teeth that feel rough or look stained
  • It’s been more than six months since your last cleaning

These are your mouth’s way of telling you it needs attention. The sooner you address them, the simpler and more comfortable the treatment.

Teeth cleaning for children

Children benefit enormously from regular professional cleanings. Kids’ teeth are more vulnerable to cavities, and early cleanings help them build lifelong healthy habits in a friendly, positive environment. We make children’s cleanings fun and gentle, and we often include fluoride and simple, encouraging brushing tips. Starting cleanings early — usually every six months once the first teeth appear and they’re comfortable — sets your child up for a lifetime of strong, healthy smiles. Learn more about our kids’ dentistry in Mississauga.

How to keep your teeth clean between visits

Professional cleanings and good home care work hand in hand. To keep your smile healthy between appointments:

  • Brush twice a day for two minutes with a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss daily to clean between teeth where your brush can’t reach.
  • Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks, and rinse with water after them.
  • Stay hydrated — saliva naturally washes away bacteria and food particles.
  • Don’t smoke — tobacco dramatically increases tartar, staining, and gum disease.
  • Keep your recall appointments so buildup never gets ahead of you.

Even with excellent home care, professional cleanings are still essential — no toothbrush can remove hardened tartar. Together, they keep your smile its healthiest.

Frequently asked questions about teeth cleaning

How long does a teeth cleaning take?

A routine teeth cleaning usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on how much buildup needs to be removed and whether X-rays and an exam are included. Deep cleanings for gum disease may take longer or be split across visits.

How often should I get my teeth cleaned?

Most people should have a professional cleaning every six months. Patients with gum disease, diabetes, heavy tartar, or who smoke may benefit from cleanings every three to four months. We’ll recommend the right schedule for you.

How much does teeth cleaning cost in Mississauga?

A routine cleaning and polish typically costs around $100 to $250, while a cleaning with an exam and X-rays may total $200 to $400. The exact cost depends on how much scaling you need. Call 905-607-1112 for a clear quote and your insurance options.

Does teeth cleaning whiten your teeth?

A cleaning removes surface stains from coffee, tea, and food, so your teeth often look noticeably brighter afterward. For a whiter shade beyond your natural colour, ask us about professional teeth whitening.

Is teeth cleaning covered by insurance?

Yes — most Canadian dental plans cover routine cleanings and exams, often once or twice a year. Preventive care is also typically included under the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). We’ll help you understand your coverage and submit your claim.

Can I get a teeth cleaning while pregnant?

Yes. Professional cleanings are safe and even recommended during pregnancy, since hormonal changes can increase the risk of gum inflammation. Just let us know you’re pregnant so we can tailor your care.

We had a great experience at Eglinton Oak Dental when we brought our 11-year-old daughter in for a cavity.

The reception staff were very welcoming, friendly, and efficient. The paperwork was completed quickly, which made the check-in process smooth and stress-free.

What impressed us the most was the paediatric dentist. She took the time to speak with our daughter, make her comfortable, and build her confidence before starting the treatment. Her patience and gentle approach made a big difference, especially since dental visits can be stressful for children.

The entire experience was excellent. The dentist also clearly explained the future course of action and what we should expect going forward.

We really appreciated the professional and caring service and would highly recommend Eglinton Oak Dental to families looking for a child-friendly dental practice.

I visited the clinic today. Initially, I was hesitant and rescheduled my appointment twice as the dental clinic I visited 2 years ago gave me serious sensitivity pain after cleanup which stayed for 2 weeks. However, I was surprised with my before and after pictures, and no sensitivity at all. Thanks Dr Maya for your service. And the best part was nobody was trying to sell me services. I was explained that my cavities arent very severe and we can check after 6 months if I face any issues.
