Invisalign vs Braces: Which Costs More in Mississauga? (2026 Comparison)

If you’re weighing Invisalign vs braces, cost is almost always the deciding question. Both options straighten teeth effectively, but they’re priced differently, covered differently by insurance, and suited to different situations. This guide breaks down exactly what each option costs in Mississauga in 2026, what drives the price up or down, and which one is likely the better value for your specific case. At Eglinton Oak Dental, we offer both traditional braces referrals and in-house Invisalign treatment — call 905-607-1112 for a free comparison consultation.

Invisalign vs braces: quick cost comparison

Here’s the short answer before we go deeper: in Mississauga, traditional metal braces typically run $3,500 to $8,000 for a full course of treatment, while Invisalign typically runs $4,000 to $9,000. For mild to moderate cases the two options often land in a similar price range, but Invisalign tends to sit at the higher end for complex cases because of the number of custom aligner trays required. Ceramic and lingual (hidden) braces cost more than standard metal braces and can sometimes exceed Invisalign pricing.

  • Metal braces: $3,500 – $8,000
  • Ceramic braces: $4,500 – $8,500
  • Invisalign (mild cases / Invisalign Express): $3,000 – $5,000
  • Invisalign (moderate to complex cases): $5,000 – $9,000

These are general Ontario ranges for 2026 — your exact price depends on how much movement your teeth need, how long treatment takes, and whether any extra procedures (like extractions or attachments) are required. The only way to get an accurate number is a consultation where we assess your bite and give you a written quote.

Invisalign vs braces: full side-by-side comparison table

Here is every option laid out side by side, so you can see cost, treatment time, and day-to-day experience in one place before you book a consultation.

Option Typical cost (Mississauga) Treatment time Visibility Best for
Metal braces $3,500 – $8,000 18 – 36 months Visible Complex bites, teens, lowest cost for severe cases
Ceramic braces $4,500 – $8,500 18 – 36 months Tooth-coloured, less visible Same as metal, more discreet
Lingual (hidden) braces $8,000 – $13,000 18 – 36 months Hidden behind teeth Patients who want zero visible hardware
Invisalign Express $3,000 – $5,000 3 – 6 months Nearly invisible Minor crowding or spacing only
Invisalign Full (moderate–complex) $5,000 – $9,000 12 – 24 months Nearly invisible Adults and teens who want discretion and removability

Figures are general 2026 Ontario ranges. Your exact price is set after a bite assessment — call 905-607-1112 for a written, itemized quote.

How much does Invisalign cost in Mississauga?

Invisalign pricing is based on the number of custom clear aligner trays your treatment plan requires, which in turn depends on how much your teeth need to move. Minor crowding or spacing might only need 10–20 trays (Invisalign Express), while more involved cases can require 30 or more trays over 12–24 months. We’ve covered Invisalign pricing in full detail in our dedicated Invisalign cost guide — but as a summary, expect anywhere from $3,000 for simple cases up to $9,000 for complex ones, with the Mississauga average landing around $5,500–$6,500. Learn more about the treatment itself on our Invisalign page.

How much do traditional braces cost in Mississauga?

Traditional braces have been the standard orthodontic treatment for decades, and their pricing is well established. In the Mississauga and greater Toronto area, expect to pay:

  • Metal braces: the most affordable option, typically $3,500–$8,000 depending on case complexity and treatment length.
  • Ceramic (tooth-coloured) braces: a more discreet alternative to metal, usually $500–$1,500 more than standard metal braces.
  • Lingual braces (behind the teeth): the most expensive bracket option, often $8,000–$13,000, since they’re custom-fabricated and more time-consuming to adjust.

Braces pricing usually includes the brackets, wires, regular adjustment visits, and a retainer at the end of treatment — but always confirm exactly what’s included before you commit, since some offices charge separately for retainers or emergency repairs.

Why is Invisalign sometimes more expensive than braces?

Invisalign and braces achieve similar results through very different processes, and that difference shows up in the price. Braces use a single set of brackets and wires that are physically adjusted every few weeks by your orthodontist. Invisalign, on the other hand, requires an entirely new custom-manufactured tray for nearly every stage of movement — sometimes 20, 30, or more trays per patient, each one designed using 3D digital scans and manufactured individually. That manufacturing cost, plus the technology and lab fees behind the clear aligner system, is why Invisalign often costs more for complex cases than a comparable case in braces.

That said, for mild cases, Invisalign Express can actually come in cheaper than braces, since it only requires a small number of trays and a shorter overall treatment window.

Hidden costs to consider with both options

The headline price isn’t always the full picture. Before deciding, ask about these often-overlooked costs:

  • Initial records & consultation: X-rays, scans, and treatment planning — sometimes bundled into the quoted price, sometimes billed separately.
  • Retainers after treatment: both braces and Invisalign patients need retainers to keep teeth in place; ask if these are included.
  • Extractions: some braces cases require removing teeth to create space, which is billed separately.
  • Attachments & refinements: Invisalign sometimes needs small tooth-coloured attachments or extra “refinement” trays partway through treatment.
  • Emergency repairs: a broken bracket or lost aligner may incur a repair or replacement fee.
  • Replacement aligners: if you lose an Invisalign tray, replacements typically cost $50–$150 each.

Ask for a complete, itemized quote upfront so there are no surprises partway through treatment.

Is Invisalign covered by insurance the same as braces?

Most Canadian dental insurance plans treat Invisalign and braces the same way under their “orthodontic coverage” category — typically covering 25% to 60% of the cost up to a lifetime orthodontic maximum (commonly $1,500–$3,000). This means your out-of-pocket cost for either option depends heavily on your specific plan. The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) currently does not cover orthodontic treatment (braces or Invisalign) for most patients, as it focuses on preventive and essential dental care — see our Canadian Dental Care Plan page for what is covered. We recommend calling your insurance provider before starting treatment so you know your exact orthodontic benefit, and our team is happy to help you understand your coverage and submit claims either way.

How common Canadian insurance plans typically handle orthodontic coverage

Every employer plan is different, but most Canadian dental insurance carriers — Sun Life, Manulife, Green Shield Canada, Canada Life, and Blue Cross among them — structure orthodontic benefits the same general way:

  • Coverage percentage: usually 25% to 60% of the orthodontic fee, applied identically whether you choose Invisalign or braces.
  • Lifetime maximum: a fixed dollar cap per person, commonly $1,500 to $3,000, occasionally higher on premium family plans — this is a one-time lifetime limit, not renewed annually.
  • Pre-authorization: most insurers want a treatment plan and cost estimate submitted before treatment starts, not after.
  • Age restrictions: some employer plans only cover orthodontics for dependents under 18; always check if the plan covers adult orthodontics before assuming it applies to you.

Because every policy is different, we recommend calling the number on the back of your insurance card to ask specifically about your “orthodontic benefit” and lifetime maximum before booking — or bring your insurance details to your consultation and our team will help verify your coverage and submit the pre-authorization for you.

Invisalign vs braces: treatment time comparison

Treatment length is similar for both options in most cases:

  • Braces: typically 18–36 months for moderate to complex cases, sometimes shorter for minor corrections.
  • Invisalign: typically 12–24 months for moderate cases, with Invisalign Express able to finish minor cases in as little as 3–6 months.

For very complex bite issues, braces sometimes achieve results in a slightly shorter timeframe because the orthodontist has more direct, continuous control over tooth movement. For mild-to-moderate cases, Invisalign is often just as fast, if not faster, especially with newer aligner technology.

Invisalign vs braces: which is right for your case?

Cost is only one part of the decision. Here’s how to think about which option actually fits you:

  • Choose braces if: you have a complex bite issue, severe crowding, or significant jaw alignment needs that require more hands-on control; you’re a teen who may not reliably wear removable trays; or you want the most predictable, lowest-cost option for a complicated case.
  • Choose Invisalign if: you have mild-to-moderate crowding, spacing, or bite issues; you want a nearly invisible option for work or social settings; you’d prefer to remove your aligners to eat, brush, and floss normally; or you’re an adult who wants a more comfortable, lower-maintenance experience.

The best way to know for certain is a consultation, where we’ll examine your teeth, discuss your goals and budget, and recommend the option that gives you the best result for your money.

Invisalign vs braces cost by case complexity

The clearest way to think about Invisalign vs braces cost is by case complexity, since that’s the single biggest price driver for both options in Mississauga:

  • Mild cases (minor crowding/spacing): Invisalign Express often costs less than braces — sometimes $1,000–$2,000 less.
  • Moderate cases: Invisalign vs braces cost is usually similar, within a few hundred dollars of each other.
  • Complex cases (severe crowding, bite correction): braces are usually more cost-effective, since Invisalign may need significantly more trays.

Three real-world Mississauga patient scenarios

Cost ranges are easier to understand with concrete examples. Here’s how the numbers typically play out for three common situations we see at our Eglinton Ave clinic:

Mild spacing, adult professional

Small gap between front teeth, otherwise healthy bite. Treated with Invisalign Express, 14 trays, 5 months, total cost around $3,400. Insurance covered $900 of it, leaving roughly $2,500 out of pocket, paid over 12 months.

Moderate crowding, teenager

Noticeable crowding on the lower arch, needs steady in-office monitoring. Treated with metal braces, 22 months, total cost around $6,200. Family insurance covered $2,000 (the plan’s lifetime maximum), leaving about $4,200 spread over the treatment period.

Complex bite correction, adult

Significant overbite plus crowding, considered a complex case. Treated with full Invisalign (38 trays plus refinements), 22 months, total cost around $8,700. Insurance covered $1,500, remaining balance financed at roughly $330/month.

These are illustrative examples based on typical cases at our clinic, not guaranteed pricing — your own treatment plan and quote will be based on your specific bite.

When Invisalign may not be the right choice

Invisalign works extremely well for most patients, but it isn’t automatically the best option for everyone. It tends to be less suitable if:

  • You have severe tooth rotations (especially rounder teeth like canines) that are difficult for a removable aligner to grip and turn.
  • You need significant vertical bite correction or jaw-position changes that benefit from an orthodontist’s continuous, hands-on adjustment.
  • You have bridges or certain missing-tooth situations that make aligner attachment placement difficult.
  • You know you won’t reliably wear the trays 20–22 hours a day — Invisalign’s outcome depends entirely on compliance, unlike fixed braces.

In these situations braces (sometimes combined with a referral to an orthodontist for the most complex bites) usually give a more predictable result. A proper consultation and digital scan will tell you definitively which category your case falls into.

Pros and cons at a glance

Braces pros: handle complex cases reliably, no compliance required (they’re fixed to your teeth), often lower cost for severe cases.

Braces cons: visible metal or ceramic brackets, food restrictions, harder to clean around, regular in-office adjustments.

Invisalign pros: nearly invisible, removable for eating and cleaning, generally more comfortable, fewer in-office visits.

Invisalign cons: requires discipline to wear 20–22 hours a day, can cost more for complex cases, not ideal for every bite issue.

Getting an accurate Invisalign vs braces cost quote

Online estimates can only give you a rough Invisalign vs braces cost range — the only way to know your real number is an in-person consultation where we examine your bite and build a personalized treatment plan. Call 905-607-1112 to book yours.

Payment plans and financing options

Whichever option you choose, the full cost doesn’t need to be paid upfront. At Eglinton Oak Dental we offer flexible monthly payment plans for both Invisalign and braces referrals, so you can spread the cost over the length of your treatment rather than paying a lump sum. We’ll also help you maximize your insurance benefit and walk you through direct billing where available, so you know exactly what you’ll owe out of pocket before treatment begins.

What a monthly payment plan actually looks like

Most patients don’t pay the full amount upfront. Spread over the typical treatment length, here is roughly what monthly payments look like after a standard insurance benefit and a modest down payment:

Case type Total cost range Typical monthly payment*
Mild case (Invisalign Express) $3,000 – $5,000 $125 – $210 / month over 24 months
Moderate case (braces or full Invisalign) $5,000 – $7,000 $210 – $290 / month over 24 months
Complex case (lingual braces or extended Invisalign) $8,000 – $13,000 $280 – $460 / month over 28 months

*Illustrative examples before any insurance reimbursement, assuming a small down payment and an interest-free in-house plan. Your actual payment depends on your specific case, down payment, and insurance benefit — ask our team for exact numbers at your consultation.

Invisalign vs braces cost: the bottom line

To sum up the Invisalign vs braces cost question: braces are usually the more budget-friendly starting point, while Invisalign can cost more for complex cases but often less for mild ones. Neither option is a one-size-fits-all “cheaper” choice — the real Invisalign vs braces cost comes down to your specific bite, your insurance coverage, and how much you value discretion and convenience during treatment.

Why choose Eglinton Oak Dental for your Invisalign or braces decision

Deciding between Invisalign and braces is easier with an honest, experienced second opinion — not a sales pitch. At Eglinton Oak Dental, our Mississauga team will give you a clear, no-pressure comparison based on your actual bite, your goals, and your budget, plus a transparent written quote for whichever option you choose. New patients are always welcome.

Frequently asked questions about Invisalign vs braces cost

Is Invisalign more expensive than braces?

For complex cases, Invisalign is often somewhat more expensive than metal braces because it requires more custom aligner trays. For mild-to-moderate cases, Invisalign Express can actually cost less than braces. Your exact cost depends on how much movement your teeth need.

Which is cheaper, Invisalign or braces, in Mississauga?

Metal braces are generally the most affordable option overall, starting around $3,500. Invisalign starts slightly higher for mild cases (around $3,000–$5,000) but can exceed braces pricing for complex cases, reaching up to $9,000.

Does insurance cover Invisalign the same as braces?

Yes, in most cases. Dental insurance plans typically apply the same orthodontic benefit to both Invisalign and braces, usually covering 25–60% up to a lifetime maximum. Call 905-607-1112 and we’ll help confirm your specific coverage.

Is Invisalign covered by the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?

No, orthodontic treatment including both Invisalign and braces is not currently covered under the CDCP for most patients, as the plan focuses on preventive and essential dental care.

How long does treatment take with each option?

Braces typically take 18–36 months for moderate to complex cases. Invisalign typically takes 12–24 months, with mild cases sometimes finishing in as little as 3–6 months using Invisalign Express.

Can adults choose either Invisalign or braces?

Yes. Both options work well for adults. Many adults prefer Invisalign for its near-invisibility and removability, while others with more complex bite issues are better suited to braces. A consultation will help determine which is right for you.

Can I switch from Invisalign to braces partway through treatment?

Yes. If your case turns out to need more correction than aligners alone can provide, we can transition you to braces without starting from zero — most of the movement already achieved is kept.

What happens if I don’t wear my Invisalign trays enough?

Treatment slows down or stalls, and trays may stop fitting properly, sometimes requiring a new scan and replacement trays at extra cost. This is the single biggest reason Invisalign timelines run long.

Do braces or Invisalign hurt more?

Both cause mild soreness for a few days after a new wire adjustment or a new aligner tray, as teeth move. Most patients describe Invisalign discomfort as milder and shorter-lived than the ache after a braces tightening appointment.

Can teenagers get Invisalign, or is it adults only?

Teens can absolutely use Invisalign (including Invisalign Teen, which has built-in compliance indicators), but for younger teens with less consistent habits, braces are sometimes recommended simply because they can’t be removed or lost.

Are replacements or repairs included in Invisalign or braces prices?

Usually not fully included in the base price of either option. With braces, minor wire/bracket repairs are typically covered during your treatment, but a lost retainer after treatment is extra. With Invisalign, your first set of aligners is included, but a lost or broken tray usually costs $50–$150 to replace — ask about a replacement-tray warranty when you get your quote, since not all Invisalign providers include one.

Are payment plans easier to get for Invisalign or braces?

Payment plans are equally available for both at Eglinton Oak Dental — cost, not treatment type, determines the monthly amount. We offer interest-free in-house monthly plans for both Invisalign and braces, typically spread over the length of treatment (12–36 months), so the real question is your total price and preferred term, not which option qualifies.

Are braces or Invisalign cheaper overall?

Metal braces are usually the lower-cost starting point ($3,500+), while Invisalign can be cheaper for mild cases (Invisalign Express from $3,000) but pricier for complex cases (up to $9,000). There is no single cheaper option for everyone — the fair comparison is your specific case after an exam, which is why we recommend a free comparison consultation before deciding.

We had a great experience at Eglinton Oak Dental when we brought our 11-year-old daughter in for a cavity.

The reception staff were very welcoming, friendly, and efficient. The paperwork was completed quickly, which made the check-in process smooth and stress-free.

What impressed us the most was the paediatric dentist. She took the time to speak with our daughter, make her comfortable, and build her confidence before starting the treatment. Her patience and gentle approach made a big difference, especially since dental visits can be stressful for children.

The entire experience was excellent. The dentist also clearly explained the future course of action and what we should expect going forward.

We really appreciated the professional and caring service and would highly recommend Eglinton Oak Dental to families looking for a child-friendly dental practice.

Initially, I was hesitant and rescheduled my appointment twice as the dental clinic I visited 2 years ago gave me serious sensitivity pain after cleanup which stayed for 2 weeks. However, I was surprised with my before and after pictures, and no sensitivity at all. Thanks Dr Maya for your service. And the best part was nobody was trying to sell me services. I was explained that my cavities arent very severe and we can check after 6 months if I face any issues.
