Chipped Tooth Repair in Mississauga: Options, Cost & What to Do Right Now (2026 Guide)

A chipped tooth is one of the most common dental emergencies we see – biting into something hard, a small accident, or even just a weak spot in old enamel. The good news: most chips are quick, comfortable fixes, and a chipped tooth almost never needs to be pulled. This guide covers exactly what to do in the first few minutes, every repair option available (from same-visit bonding to a crown), realistic Mississauga pricing, and how to tell whether your chip is a “see us this week” situation or a genuine emergency.

Medically reviewed by Dr. Sahil Gagnani, DMD (McGill University), MDS (AIIMS) — general dentist at Eglinton Oak Dental, Mississauga. Last updated 2026.

Chipped a Tooth Today?

Most chips can be seen and repaired the same day. Call 905-607-1112 or fill in the quick form below and we’ll get you in.

What to Do Right Now if You’ve Chipped a Tooth

  1. Rinse your mouth with warm water to clear any debris and get a clear look at the damage.
  2. Save the piece if you can find it – keep it moist (a small container of milk or saliva) and bring it with you. It isn’t always usable, but it occasionally helps with a same-visit repair.
  3. Apply gentle pressure with gauze if there’s any bleeding from the lip, cheek, or gum.
  4. Cover a sharp edge with a small piece of orthodontic wax or sugar-free gum if it’s cutting your tongue or cheek until you’re seen.
  5. Avoid chewing on that side, and skip very hot, cold, or sugary food and drink if the tooth feels sensitive.
  6. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if there’s discomfort, and call us the same day.

Most chips are not a true emergency, but a few signs mean you should be seen right away rather than waiting: sharp or worsening pain, visible pink or red inside the tooth (a sign the nerve is exposed), a large piece missing that changes your bite, or any swelling in the face or gum.

What Causes a Chipped Tooth?

  • Biting into something hard – ice, hard candy, popcorn kernels, nuts
  • A fall, sports impact, or minor accident
  • Grinding or clenching (bruxism) wearing enamel thin over time
  • An old, large filling weakening the remaining tooth structure
  • Untreated decay hollowing out the tooth from the inside, so it chips under normal biting force
  • Simply weaker or thinner enamel in some people, unrelated to any single incident

How Serious Is My Chip? The Three Grades

Grade What It Looks Like Typical Fix
Minor A small flake off the edge or surface, no pain, tooth feels smooth or just slightly rough Smoothing/polishing, or cosmetic bonding if visible
Moderate A noticeable piece missing, some sensitivity to hot/cold/sweet, sharp edge Dental bonding, or a veneer if it’s a front tooth and cosmetics matter most
Severe Large piece missing, visible pink/red centre, real pain, or the tooth feels loose Crown, and a root canal first if the nerve is exposed or infected

Every Repair Option, From Simplest to Most Involved

Smoothing and polishing

For a tiny chip that’s purely cosmetic with no rough edge, sometimes all that’s needed is gently smoothing and polishing the tooth – a quick, same-visit fix with no anesthetic required.

Dental bonding

The most common fix for small to moderate chips, especially on front teeth. A tooth-coloured composite resin is sculpted directly onto the tooth, shaped to match its natural contour, and hardened with a curing light – typically done in a single visit with no anesthetic needed, and no lab or wait time. See our full dental bonding page for more detail.

Dental veneer

For a front tooth where appearance matters most, or where a chip is part of a broader cosmetic concern (colour, shape, alignment), a thin porcelain or composite veneer can cover the whole front surface for a more uniform, longer-lasting result than bonding alone.

Dental crown

When a large piece is missing, the tooth has already had a root canal, or there isn’t enough healthy structure left for bonding to hold up long-term (especially on back teeth that take heavy chewing force), a crown rebuilds the entire visible tooth. See our dental crowns page for full detail.

Root canal, then a crown

If the chip is deep enough to expose or damage the nerve – usually visible as a pink or reddish centre, or accompanied by real pain and sensitivity – a root canal comes first to treat the nerve, followed by a crown to rebuild and protect the tooth. See our root canal treatment guide.

Extraction, only as a last resort

A chip essentially never requires removing the tooth. Extraction only becomes relevant in rare cases where the tooth has broken well below the gumline with too little structure left to restore, or where an old underlying issue (severe decay, prior root canal failure) makes the tooth unsalvageable independent of the chip itself.

How Much Does Chipped Tooth Repair Cost in Mississauga?

Repair Typical Cost (CAD)
Smoothing/polishing only Often included in the visit fee, minimal extra cost
Dental bonding, per tooth $150 – $400
Porcelain veneer, per tooth $1,000 – $2,000
Dental crown, per tooth $910 – $1,449
Root canal + crown (if the nerve is affected) roughly $1,900 – $4,100 total

The single biggest factor in cost is which repair your specific chip actually needs – a small bonding repair and a full root canal plus crown are very different procedures. We always do a proper exam and give a clear, itemized quote before starting anything, so there are no surprises.

Is Chipped Tooth Repair Covered by Insurance or the CDCP?

Most private dental insurance plans cover bonding, crowns, and root canals as restorative treatment at a percentage of the cost, depending on your specific plan – we’re happy to check your benefits and submit the claim directly. If you don’t have private insurance, you may qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), which covers many restorative services for eligible patients. We’re a CDCP-participating practice and can confirm your eligibility before treatment begins.

Will a Chipped Tooth Heal on Its Own?

No – unlike bone, enamel and dentin cannot regenerate or repair themselves once chipped. A small chip that doesn’t hurt won’t necessarily get worse on its own, but it also won’t fix itself, and the exposed, roughened edge is more prone to further chipping, staining, and plaque buildup over time. Getting it evaluated, even if you decide to wait on cosmetic repair, means we can confirm the nerve wasn’t affected and catch any early sensitivity before it becomes a bigger problem.

Can a Chipped Tooth Get Worse If I Wait?

Yes, and this is one of the most common things we see: a small, painless chip left untreated for months can weaken further and crack more significantly under normal biting force, sometimes turning a simple bonding fix into a crown, or a crown into a root canal. If the chip exposed any inner tooth structure, waiting also increases the risk of decay or infection setting in through that opening. When in doubt, it’s worth a quick exam even if the chip seems minor.

How Long Does Chipped Tooth Repair Take?

Bonding is typically completed in a single visit, often 30–60 minutes depending on how much shaping is needed. A veneer or crown usually needs two visits – one to prepare and take an impression or digital scan, and a second to fit the final restoration, with a temporary in place in between (unless same-day crown milling is used). A root canal followed by a crown takes the longest, generally spread across two to three appointments.

Common Myths About Chipped Teeth, Debunked

“A small chip isn’t worth seeing a dentist for.”

Even a small chip is worth a quick check – it’s the only way to confirm the nerve wasn’t affected, and a rough edge that seems minor now can chip further or trap plaque if left as-is.

“If it doesn’t hurt, it’s fine.”

Pain isn’t a reliable indicator – some chips that expose the nerve take hours or days to start hurting, while some purely cosmetic chips are uncomfortable simply because of the sharp edge.

“A chipped tooth always needs a crown.”

Most chips are actually fixed with simple bonding, not a crown. Crowns are reserved for larger breaks or teeth that have already lost significant structure.

“Super glue or a DIY fix is fine until I can get an appointment.”

Never use household glue or adhesive on a tooth – it isn’t safe to ingest, doesn’t bond properly to enamel, and can make the eventual professional repair harder. Orthodontic wax over a sharp edge is a safe temporary measure; glue is not.

Preventing Future Chips

  • Avoid chewing ice, hard candy, popcorn kernels, and other very hard foods
  • Wear a custom night guard if you grind or clench your teeth
  • Use a proper mouthguard for contact sports
  • Don’t use your teeth as a tool to open packaging or bite off tags
  • Keep up with regular checkups so early decay or old, weakening fillings are caught before they lead to a chip

What to Expect at Eglinton Oak Dental

We’ll examine the chip, check whether the nerve is involved, and walk you through the right-sized fix for your specific situation – not the most expensive option, the appropriate one. Most bonding repairs are completed the same visit. If you’re anxious about the appointment, we also offer sedation options for a more comfortable experience.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chipped Tooth Repair

What should I do immediately after chipping a tooth?

Rinse with warm water, save the piece if you can find it, cover any sharp edge with orthodontic wax, avoid chewing on that side, and call us the same day. Most chips are not a true emergency but should still be seen promptly.

How much does it cost to fix a chipped tooth in Mississauga?

Bonding typically runs 150 to 400 dollars per tooth, a veneer 1,000 to 2,000 dollars, and a crown roughly 910 to 1,449 dollars, depending on which repair your specific chip needs. A root canal is only needed if the nerve is affected.

Can a chipped tooth be fixed in one visit?

Yes, in most cases. Dental bonding, the most common repair for a chip, is typically completed in a single 30 to 60 minute visit with no anesthetic needed.

Does a chipped tooth always need a crown?

No. Most chips are repaired with simple bonding. A crown is only needed when a large piece is missing or the remaining tooth structure is too weak to support bonding long-term.

Will a chipped tooth heal itself?

No, enamel and dentin cannot regenerate. A small chip won’t necessarily worsen on its own, but it needs a professional repair to stop it from chipping further, staining, or trapping plaque.

Is a chipped tooth an emergency?

It depends on severity. Sharp or worsening pain, a visible pink or red centre, a large missing piece, or facial swelling mean you should be seen right away. A small, painless chip can typically wait for a next-day or same-week appointment.

Can I glue a chipped tooth back together myself?

No, household glue is not safe to use in the mouth and doesn’t bond properly to tooth enamel. Orthodontic wax over a sharp edge is a safe temporary measure until you’re seen.

Is chipped tooth repair covered by insurance or the CDCP?

Most private insurance plans cover bonding, veneers, and crowns as restorative treatment at a percentage of cost. Eligible patients under the Canadian Dental Care Plan can also have restorative work covered, and we can confirm eligibility before treatment.

What happens if I don’t fix a chipped tooth?

The chip won’t heal on its own, and the rough, exposed edge is more prone to further chipping, staining, and trapping plaque. If the chip exposed inner tooth structure, waiting also raises the risk of decay or infection.

Can a chipped front tooth look natural after repair?

Yes. Dental bonding and porcelain veneers are both colour-matched and sculpted to blend with your natural tooth shape, and most patients find the repair is not noticeable to others.

We had a great experience at Eglinton Oak Dental when we brought our 11-year-old daughter in for a cavity.

The reception staff were very welcoming, friendly, and efficient. The paperwork was completed quickly, which made the check-in process smooth and stress-free.

What impressed us the most was the paediatric dentist. She took the time to speak with our daughter, make her comfortable, and build her confidence before starting the treatment. Her patience and gentle approach made a big difference, especially since dental visits can be stressful for children.

The entire experience was excellent. The dentist also clearly explained the future course of action and what we should expect going forward.

We really appreciated the professional and caring service and would highly recommend Eglinton Oak Dental to families looking for a child-friendly dental practice.

I visited the clinic today. Initially, I was hesitant and rescheduled my appointment twice as the dental clinic I visited 2 years ago gave me serious sensitivity pain after cleanup which stayed for 2 weeks. However, I was surprised with my before and after pictures, and no sensitivity at all. Thanks Dr Maya for your service. And the best part was nobody was trying to sell me services. I was explained that my cavities arent very severe and we can check after 6 months if I face any issues.
