Gum Disease Treatment in Mississauga: Symptoms, Stages & Cost (2026 Guide)

Bleeding gums when you brush are often dismissed as normal, but they’re actually one of the earliest warning signs of gum disease — a condition affecting a majority of adults to some degree, and one of the leading causes of adult tooth loss when left untreated. The good news: caught early, gum disease treatment Mississauga patients receive is straightforward, comfortable, and highly effective at reversing damage before it becomes permanent. This guide covers the stages of gum disease, symptoms to watch for, treatment options, and cost.

At Eglinton Oak Dental, we screen for gum disease at every checkup and offer treatment ranging from deep cleanings to more advanced periodontal care — call 905-607-1112 if you’ve noticed bleeding, swollen, or receding gums.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease (periodontal disease) is a bacterial infection of the tissues that support your teeth — the gums, ligaments, and bone. It begins with plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on teeth, which hardens into tartar (calculus) if not removed through regular brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings. Left in place, that plaque and tartar irritate and infect the gum tissue, triggering an inflammatory response that, over time, can break down the structures holding your teeth in place. Gum disease treatment Mississauga dentists provide aims to remove that bacterial buildup, calm the infection, and, where possible, help damaged tissue reattach and heal.

The stages of gum disease

Gingivitis (early, reversible stage)

Gingivitis is the mildest and most common form of gum disease, affecting an estimated majority of adults at some point. It’s characterized by red, swollen gums that bleed easily when brushing or flossing, but critically, the bone and connective tissue holding teeth in place are not yet affected. This means gingivitis is fully reversible with improved oral hygiene and a professional cleaning — which is exactly why catching it at this stage matters so much.

Early to moderate periodontitis

If gingivitis isn’t addressed, the infection can progress to periodontitis, where the inflammation begins to break down the bone and ligaments anchoring your teeth. Small gaps called “pockets” form between the teeth and gums as tissue pulls away, giving bacteria even more room to grow. At this stage, damage is no longer fully reversible, but it can be effectively managed and halted from progressing further with more intensive treatment.

Advanced periodontitis

In advanced periodontitis, significant bone loss has occurred, pockets have deepened further, teeth may become loose or shift position, and in severe cases, tooth loss becomes a real risk. Advanced cases often require more involved treatment, sometimes including referral to a periodontist (a gum disease specialist), and the focus shifts to stabilizing the condition and preserving as many teeth as possible.

Symptoms of gum disease to watch for

  • Gums that bleed when brushing, flossing, or even eating firm foods
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums, rather than the firm, pale pink of healthy gums
  • Persistent bad breath or a bad taste that doesn’t go away with brushing
  • Gums that appear to be pulling away from teeth, making teeth look longer
  • Loose or shifting teeth, or changes in how your bite feels
  • Pus between the teeth and gums in more advanced cases
  • New spaces developing between teeth that weren’t there before

Early gum disease often causes no pain at all, which is precisely why so many people don’t realize they have it until a dentist points it out at a checkup — another strong argument for keeping regular six-month exams even when your mouth feels fine.

What causes gum disease?

The primary cause is plaque and tartar buildup from inconsistent brushing and flossing, but several factors increase risk or severity:

  • Smoking or vaping, which significantly increases gum disease risk and severity, and also masks bleeding (an early warning sign), making it easier to miss
  • Diabetes, which impairs the body’s ability to fight infection, including gum infections
  • Hormonal changes, such as pregnancy, puberty, or menopause, which can make gums more sensitive to plaque
  • Certain medications that reduce saliva flow or cause gum tissue changes
  • Genetics, since some people are predisposed to gum disease even with good hygiene habits
  • Crooked or crowded teeth, which are harder to clean thoroughly
  • Stress, which can weaken the immune system’s ability to fight infection

Gum disease treatment options

Professional cleaning (for gingivitis)

For early-stage gingivitis, a thorough professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar buildup, combined with improved daily brushing and flossing at home, is usually enough to fully reverse the condition within a few weeks. We’ll also review your technique and may recommend specific tools (like interdental brushes or a water flosser) if standard flossing is a struggle.

Scaling and root planing (deep cleaning)

For periodontitis, a standard cleaning isn’t enough because bacteria and tartar have built up below the gumline, inside the pockets that have formed. Scaling and root planing — often called a “deep cleaning” — removes plaque and tartar from both above and below the gumline and smooths the tooth root surfaces so gum tissue can reattach more easily. This is typically done in one or two visits, using local anesthesia so the procedure is comfortable, and is usually followed by more frequent maintenance cleanings (often every three to four months rather than six) to keep the condition stable.

Antibiotic therapy

In some cases, localized antibiotic gel is placed directly into deep pockets after scaling and root planing to further reduce bacteria, or a short course of oral antibiotics may be prescribed for more widespread or aggressive infection.

Periodontal maintenance

Once gum disease is stabilized, ongoing periodontal maintenance cleanings — more frequent than a standard six-month cleaning — are the key to preventing it from progressing further. Skipping these maintenance visits is one of the most common reasons gum disease returns or worsens after initial treatment.

Surgical treatment (advanced cases)

For advanced periodontitis with significant bone loss, more involved procedures — such as flap surgery to access and clean deep pockets, bone grafting to rebuild lost bone, or gum grafting to cover exposed roots — may be recommended, typically in coordination with or referral to a periodontist.

How much does gum disease treatment cost in Mississauga?

Cost depends heavily on the stage of gum disease and treatment needed. As a general 2026 guide:

  • Standard cleaning (gingivitis stage): roughly $150 – $300
  • Scaling and root planing (per quadrant): roughly $200 – $350 per quadrant (many patients need all four)
  • Periodontal maintenance cleaning: roughly $180 – $320 per visit
  • Localized antibiotic treatment: roughly $50 – $150 per site

These figures roughly follow the Ontario Dental Association fee guide. We always provide a written treatment plan and cost estimate before starting, broken down by stage, so you understand exactly what’s being treated and why.

Is gum disease treatment covered by insurance or the CDCP?

Most employer dental plans cover preventive cleanings at 80–100%, and scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) is typically covered as a “basic” or “periodontal” service, often at 50–80%, though annual maximums and frequency limits vary by plan. If you don’t have private insurance, the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) covers eligible children, seniors, and adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate for many periodontal services, subject to income eligibility. We’re happy to check your coverage and walk you through costs before treatment begins.

Can gum disease be reversed?

Gingivitis, the earliest stage, is fully reversible with a professional cleaning and improved home care — gums typically return to healthy pink, firm tissue within a few weeks. Once periodontitis has caused bone loss, that specific bone loss cannot be fully reversed, but the disease can be halted and stabilized with proper treatment and maintenance, preventing further damage and preserving your remaining teeth for the long term. This is why early detection matters so much: the earlier gum disease is caught, the more of it can actually be undone rather than just managed.

Gum disease and your overall health

Research has linked untreated gum disease to several broader health concerns, including cardiovascular disease, difficulty controlling diabetes, and complications during pregnancy. The exact mechanisms are still being studied, but the working theory is that chronic gum inflammation and bacteria can affect the body more broadly, not just the mouth. This is one more reason gum health deserves the same attention as any other chronic health condition, rather than being dismissed as a minor cosmetic issue.

How to prevent gum disease at home

  • Brush twice daily for two minutes with a soft-bristled brush, angled slightly toward the gumline
  • Floss daily, or use interdental brushes or a water flosser if string floss is difficult to manage
  • Avoid smoking and vaping, both major risk factors for gum disease progression
  • Keep up with six-month checkups and cleanings, even when your gums feel fine
  • Manage underlying conditions like diabetes in coordination with your physician, since it directly affects gum health
  • Consider an antibacterial mouthwash if recommended by your dentist for additional plaque control

What to expect at a gum disease assessment

At every routine checkup, we measure the depth of the small pocket around each tooth using a periodontal probe — healthy pockets measure 1–3mm, while deeper measurements indicate developing gum disease. We also check for bleeding on probing, gum recession, tooth mobility, and review any bone loss visible on X-rays. This assessment, done consistently at every visit, is how we catch gum disease early, often before you’ve noticed any symptoms yourself, and it takes only a few extra minutes during your regular exam.

Common myths about gum disease

Myth: Bleeding gums are normal if you brush hard enough. Bleeding is never truly “normal” — it’s a sign of inflammation, and healthy gums should not bleed during normal brushing or flossing.

Myth: If it doesn’t hurt, it’s not serious. Gum disease is frequently painless, especially in its early and moderate stages, which is exactly why it goes unnoticed and untreated for so long.

Myth: Gum disease only affects older adults. While risk increases with age, gingivitis and even periodontitis can affect adults of any age, and even teenagers in some cases.

Myth: Once you have gum disease, there’s nothing to be done. Even advanced periodontitis can be stabilized with proper treatment, preventing further tooth loss even if some past damage can’t be fully reversed.

When to see a periodontist

Most gum disease is effectively managed by a general dentist, but advanced cases — significant bone loss, complex pocket depths, or cases not responding to standard scaling and root planing — are sometimes referred to a periodontist, a specialist focused exclusively on gum and supporting-bone health. We’ll recommend a referral if we feel specialist-level care will give you a meaningfully better outcome, and will coordinate closely with the specialist on your ongoing care afterward.

Why Choose Eglinton Oak Dental for Gum Disease Treatment

Gum disease is one of the most common, and most preventable, causes of long-term tooth loss — and catching it early is almost always easier and less costly than treating it once it’s advanced. Our team screens for gum disease at every checkup and takes the time to explain exactly what stage you’re at and what it means, rather than just noting it on a chart. Rated 4.8★ by more than 320 patients, we welcome new patients for a full gum health assessment. Call 905-607-1112 to book yours.

What are the first signs of gum disease?

The earliest signs are gums that bleed when brushing or flossing, along with redness and swelling, often with no pain at all.

How much does gum disease treatment cost in Mississauga?

A standard cleaning for gingivitis runs roughly $150–$300, while scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) for periodontitis runs roughly $200–$350 per quadrant.

Is gum disease treatment covered by insurance?

Most plans cover preventive cleanings at 80–100% and scaling and root planing at 50–80%, though limits vary by plan. CDCP coverage may also apply for eligible patients.

What is scaling and root planing?

It’s a deep cleaning that removes plaque and tartar from below the gumline and smooths tooth roots so gum tissue can reattach, used to treat periodontitis.

Does smoking affect gum disease?

Yes, smoking significantly increases both the risk and severity of gum disease, and can mask bleeding, an early warning sign, making it harder to catch.

Can gum disease cause tooth loss?

Yes, untreated periodontitis is one of the leading causes of adult tooth loss, as it breaks down the bone and tissue supporting teeth.

How often should I get a cleaning if I have gum disease?

Patients with active or treated gum disease are typically recommended more frequent maintenance cleanings, often every three to four months rather than six.

We had a great experience at Eglinton Oak Dental when we brought our 11-year-old daughter in for a cavity.

The reception staff were very welcoming, friendly, and efficient. The paperwork was completed quickly, which made the check-in process smooth and stress-free.

What impressed us the most was the paediatric dentist. She took the time to speak with our daughter, make her comfortable, and build her confidence before starting the treatment. Her patience and gentle approach made a big difference, especially since dental visits can be stressful for children.

The entire experience was excellent. The dentist also clearly explained the future course of action and what we should expect going forward.

We really appreciated the professional and caring service and would highly recommend Eglinton Oak Dental to families looking for a child-friendly dental practice.

I visited the clinic today. Initially, I was hesitant and rescheduled my appointment twice as the dental clinic I visited 2 years ago gave me serious sensitivity pain after cleanup which stayed for 2 weeks. However, I was surprised with my before and after pictures, and no sensitivity at all. Thanks Dr Maya for your service. And the best part was nobody was trying to sell me services. I was explained that my cavities arent very severe and we can check after 6 months if I face any issues.
