Crown, filling, inlay or extraction — which is right?
If more than roughly half the biting surface is missing, a filling will keep breaking and a crown is the sensible choice. Where the damage is moderate, an inlay or onlay can preserve more of the natural tooth. Where a crack extends below the gumline or the root is fractured, no crown will save it and extraction followed by an implant or bridge is the honest recommendation. How long do crowns last, and how do you look after them?
A well-made crown typically lasts 10 to 15 years, and often considerably longer. What ends most crowns is not the crown itself but decay at the margin where it meets the tooth, so flossing that junction matters. Grinding is the other main threat — if you clench at night, a custom night guard is the cheapest insurance you can buy. Keep up regular checkups so any leak is caught while it is still small.
