Does a root canal hurt?
During treatment, no — the tooth is fully anaesthetised, and most patients say it felt like a long filling. The exception is a tooth that is acutely infected, where anaesthetic works less predictably; in that situation we often prescribe antibiotics for a few days first so the freezing takes properly. Afterwards, expect the tooth to feel tender to bite on for two to five days, which over-the-counter pain relief handles comfortably. Severe pain after treatment is not normal — call us if it happens.
Aftercare and how long the tooth will last
Avoid chewing on the treated side until the permanent restoration is placed, because an unprotected back tooth can fracture. Once crowned, a root-treated tooth can last decades. It is no longer alive, so it will not warn you with sensitivity if decay starts around the edge of the crown — which makes routine checkups and cleanings more important, not less.
