Whether a child grows up comfortable at the dentist is decided almost entirely in the first few visits. As a kids dentist for Central Erin Mills families, our approach is deliberately slow: show the tools, count the teeth, explain everything in words a five-year-old actually understands, and never spring a surprise. Eglinton Oak Dental is at 3960 Eglinton Avenue West, Unit 12, a few minutes from Erin Mills Town Centre and the Glen Erin Drive schools. Our main children’s dentistry page covers the full service list.
Children’s Services
What we do for young patients
First Dental Visit
Short, friendly and mostly about familiarity — recommended by the first birthday.
Cleanings & Checkups
Every six months, with brushing coaching aimed at the child rather than the parent.
Dental Sealants
A protective coating on the grooves of the back molars — see sealants.
Fluoride Varnish
A quick fluoride treatment that strengthens enamel against early decay.
Gentle Fillings
Tooth-coloured fillings for baby and adult teeth, with plenty of numbing and no rush.
Baby Tooth Nerve Treatment
Pulpectomy to save a badly decayed baby tooth rather than lose it early.

How we introduce children to the chair
- Tell–show–do: every instrument is named and demonstrated on a finger first
- Lap exams for toddlers: very young children can sit on a parent’s knee
- Counting teeth: the first appointment often goes no further than a look and a polish
- Positive language: we avoid words like needle, drill and pain entirely
- Parents stay: you are welcome in the room throughout
- Finish on a win: children leave having succeeded at something, even if it was small
A first visit usually takes 20 to 30 minutes — short on purpose.
Why early dental care matters more than parents expect
Tooth decay remains one of the most common chronic childhood conditions in Canada, and baby teeth matter: they hold space for the adult teeth, and an infection in one can damage the permanent tooth forming underneath. Losing a baby molar early often means orthodontic problems later — which is why we treat rather than simply extract wherever the tooth can be saved.

What does children’s dentistry cost in Mississauga?
Children’s preventive care is the best-covered category in Canadian dentistry. Most workplace plans pay 80–100% of exams, cleanings, fluoride and sealants, and children under 18 in eligible households can be covered by the Canadian Dental Care Plan. We accept CDCP and will confirm coverage before treatment.
If your child is anxious about the dentist
Dental anxiety in children is usually learned — from a difficult past appointment, or from overhearing an adult’s own fear. The fixes are practical: book a morning slot when your child is fresh, avoid promising there will be “no needles” (a promise nobody can keep), skip the word “hurt” entirely, and let us do a short familiarisation visit with no treatment at all. For older children who need more support, sedation options can be discussed. Most children who start young never develop the fear in the first place.
Preventing cavities at home
Brush twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste — a smear for under-3s, a pea-sized amount after that — and supervise brushing until roughly age eight, because manual dexterity is the limiting factor, not willingness. Start flossing once teeth touch. The habit that causes the most damage in this age group is grazing: juice, milk or snacks sipped throughout the day keeps acid levels high for hours. Water between meals is the single easiest change most families can make.

Frequently asked questions: kids dentist in Central Erin Mills
At what age should my child first see a dentist?
By the first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth appearing, as recommended by the Canadian Dental Association. Early visits are short and focused on comfort rather than treatment.
How much does a child’s dental checkup cost?
A child exam is typically $80 to $140 and a cleaning $70 to $150. Fluoride varnish is around $30 to $45 and sealants $60 to $100 per tooth.
Are children covered by the CDCP?
Children under 18 in eligible households can be covered by the Canadian Dental Care Plan. We accept CDCP and confirm coverage before any treatment.
Do cavities in baby teeth really need filling?
Yes. Untreated decay in baby teeth causes pain and infection, can damage the permanent tooth forming underneath, and early tooth loss often leads to crowding later.
What are dental sealants and does my child need them?
Sealants are a thin protective coating painted into the deep grooves of the back molars, where toothbrush bristles cannot reach. They are quick, painless and most valuable on the six-year and twelve-year molars.
My child is very anxious — can you help?
Yes. We use tell-show-do, allow lap exams for toddlers, keep parents in the room, and are happy to run a familiarisation visit with no treatment at all so the room stops being unfamiliar.
Can I stay in the room with my child?
Yes, parents are welcome to stay throughout. For very young children we often prefer it.
How often should children have a checkup?
Every six months for most children. We may suggest three or four monthly visits if there is a high decay risk, or extend the interval where risk is low.
